What Hi Fi System Should I Buy?

High end audio systems can be a difficult thing for the average Joe or Jill to get their head around. Wireless sound systems, amplifiers, preamplifiers, power supplies, speakers; there’s so much jargon that gets thrown around and making a purchasing decision can be an overwhelming job, when really all you want is high-quality sound at home.

There are, as is the case with any product, two ends of the spectrum when it comes to audio systems. The lower end is full of affordable, basic options, all of which can serve a purpose. But a high-end audio system can make you feel like you’re sat in the first violinist’s chair in a symphony orchestra, or the front row of a rock concert and should raise the hairs on the back of your neck every time you switch it on.

So rather than muck around in the lower end of the spectrum, let’s talk high-end. These fit into two primary categories; streaming speakers and all-in-one amplifiers. There is a vast range of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operable speakers on the market, and the quality is improving all the time. A good entry point is Naim’s Mu-so. The Mu-so is a wireless sound system that can act as either a perfect extra room solution for someone who already has an extensive home audio system or a great starting point for someone who is dipping their toes in the pond for the very first time.

A streaming speaker is compact, and offers easy connectivity with services such as AirPlay, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, UPnP and Internet Radio. Usually they are controlled with an Apple iOS and/or Android app. As they are one box they don’t require lots of extra cabling unless you want to connect a television or turntable into one of the inputs.

The next step is an all-in-one amplifier. These connect to a pair of hi-fi speakers (either bookshelf or floor-standing) and offer the same connectivity as the Mu-so family along with extra inputs and a more “live” experience. The Naim Uniti family offers three units, from the entry Atom, to the CD-playing Star and the flagship Nova. Finally, the Uniti Core music server completes the range, allowing you to store and stream thousands of albums and back up all of your music in one place. With each player working independently (or together), simply add speakers to unleash your music in any room of the house.

If you’re stepping into the world of high end audio, research is your best friend and remember, high-end doesn’t mean high price. The best way to get the best sound in your home, is to know the product. Speak to the experts, google what you don’t know. By reading this article, you’re off to a great start!
